Gwede Mantashe to meet stakeholders at Phalaborwa Mine after 6 PMC miners died

Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe is on Tuesday expected to meet with unions and the management at Palabora Mining Company (PMC) in Phalaborwa.

This follows the death of 6 miners who died underground, following a fire that broke out on Sunday. Families and unions are demanding answers about what led to the incident that claimed the lives of innocent workers. The National Union of Mineworkers has accused the mine o being economical about the details, saying the mine needs to account.

A team of inspectors went underground on Monday after the fire was extinguished to establish the cause, but has since not released a full report. The death of miners underground remains a crisis in mines in South Africa, with unions accusing mines and the department of Mineral Resources of not following proper safety procedures. Mining operations at the Palabora Mining Company have since been halted.
