Maimane’s call to join protest against fuel levies

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has dismissed the notion that international commodity prices are solely to blame for the country’s high fuel prices.

Maimane says if that were the case, other Southern African Development Community countries including Botswana, Lesotho and Zambia would be in the same position.

Maimane, joined by representatives of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) and several taxi and transport associations, briefed the media in Tshwane on Tuesday, on what they call unaffordable fuel levies.

He was speaking at a press briefing in Pretoria in which he announced the party’s support to organisations, who plan on embarking on a national shutdown on Friday, opposing the high fuel prices.

The parties are calling for a 20% reduction in the fuel levy, something Maimane says will bring relief to the country’s citizens.
