Former United Nations secretary general, Kofi Annan Died at 80

Ghana has declared a week of mourning after the death of former United Nations secretary general, Kofi Annan.



The Nobel peace laureate died in hospital in Bern, Switzerland in the early hours of Saturday morning He was 80-years-old.
His wife and their children were by his side when he died.

Born in Kumasi, Ghana, on 8 April 1938, he was the first secretary-general to emerge from the ranks of United Nations staff.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the death of Annan comes as a shock as he was with him only a few weeks ago when he visited South Africa.
Ramaphosa has described Annan as “as a great leader and diplomat extraordinaire”.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has sent condolences to Annan’s wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina.
The foundation says it regarded Annan as a friend and he enjoyed a close relationship with Nelson Mandela over many years.
