Democratic Alliance wants answers on Medupi Unit 4 explosion

The Democratic Alliance says it needs answers from Eskom following an explosion at Unit 4 at Medupi power station in Lephalale, Limpopo which caused unit 5 to trip.

This comes a week after Eskom had announced that all units at the power station were finally producing at full capacity.

The DA’s member of parliament, Ghaleb Cachalia says it should be clear if this incident will have consequences such as loadshedding and how is the state of the whole Medupi plant.

He further says there needs to be transparency around the cause of the explosion and the findings should be shared with the public.

Eskom has placed 6 employees who are allegedly responsible for the explosion under preliminary suspension pending the conclusion of the investigations.

According to the Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshatsha, their preliminary investigations into the explosion of Unit 4 at Medupi power station revealed that there was a deviation from the procedure of displacing hydrogen with Carbon Dioxide and air.

He says the air was introduced into the generator at the point where hydrogen was still present in the generator at sufficient quantities to create an explosion.

Mantshatsha says the explosion has resulted into an extensive damage to the generator and further investigations including the impact it will have on the national grid are still underway.
