Weather update: Strong winds expected, so hold on to your ballots on Monday



The South African Weather Service issued a warning for damaging winds in the Cape provinces, extending further inland. For the rest of the country, a cloudy to warm day is expected.

Impact-based warning:

Yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds is expected over the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and the western parts of the Free State and North West provinces.

Fire danger warning:

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the north-eastern parts of the Western Cape, the interior of the Eastern Cape, the western parts of the Free State and in places in the North West.

The weather in your province: 

Gauteng will be partly cloudy and warm.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

In Mpumalanga, it will be a partly cloudy, with morning fog patches in the east, otherwise fine and warm, but hot in the lowveld.

It will be partly cloudy in the east of Limpopo, otherwise fine and hot.

The North West will be fine, windy and warm to hot.

Fine, windy and warm conditions are expected in the Free State, becoming partly cloudy from the afternoon.

In the Northern Cape, it will be fine in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot.

It will be cloudy and cold to cool along the coast and adjacent interior, where isolated showers and rain are expected.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh westerly to north-westerly, becoming fresh south-westerly from the afternoon.

The Western Cape will be partly cloudy and warm in the north-east, otherwise cloudy, cool and windy, with isolated showers and rain, but scattered in the west.

The wind along the coast will be fresh westerly to north-westerly, becoming fresh to strong south-westerly along the west and south-west coast from late morning, spreading along the south coast from the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

It will be warm to hot over the northern interior of the western half of the Eastern Cape, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers in places from the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly in the eastern half of the Eastern Cape, where it will be fine and warm to hot.

It will become partly cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers in places from the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, becoming fresh to strong south-westerly from the afternoon.

There will be morning fog patches over the interior of KwaZulu-Natal, otherwise fine and warm, but hot in places in the north, becoming partly cloudy from the afternoon.
